Because it is a holiday weekend, and because I am deep into memoir revisions, aka I thought I was closer to the finish line than it appears I am, turns out writing a book is hard, I am keeping this pocket short. Today, I am sharing a poem I wrote this week which I hope conveys the song of gratitude within my heart.
Speaking of songs. Here is a song that I love. I may have borrowed my poem title from this beautiful song by Erin McKeown.
I am so grateful for this community and the connections I get to make with all of you every week. Please join us for some conversation in the comments.
What resonates with you today? What song plays in your heart, real or metaphorical? What are you grateful for? What have you had to let go of?
“Born to Hum”
To the morning
the hum of the radiator
the whistle of the kettle
the steam from my cup
To all that my hands can hold
To the blue dark before dawn
the light of a candle
the scent of oranges
the pen in my hand
To my nose which fits in the nape of my husband’s neck
the record he plays
the song that holds us
“We were born to hum”
To my son who sits between us as we flip through old photo albums
To the people we once were
To the friends we once knew
To the lives we once lived
To all that we can no longer hold
To the football toss
the light in Seabass’ eyes when his play works
To his dance of joy in the end zone
To the bump of his fist against mine
To the hug Anna and I exchange
and the wisdom
that we would rather watch the light
between the ponderosas
than chase something we can’t catch
To all that my heart can hold
Here’s the heart to click if this pocket made your heart sing.
"To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go ..."
