Teaching is an awesome responsibility; and you are in it for all the right reasons. Sadly, over the course of my career I’ve known too many who are in it for all the wrong reasons. I am so proud of you! It is very powerful to have the ability and compassion to do this job; knowing you literally have the capacity to change the trajectory of someone’s life; to help young minds to see possibility and a path forward.
This I know to be true from my own experience. Teaching has been a great love in my life. With all the lives you touch in meaningful ways; you are giving a gift to the world and hope for the future- no small thing, indeed.
I love your story! Your students are lucky to have you! I taught first grade and my first year I lost count of how many sinus infections I had from catching my students’ colds. I ended up with pneumonia after my 7th (?) sinus infection, but it’s part of building up our immune system in our early years of teaching, right? 😉
I never caught the stomach flu from my students. Even when one of my students threw up in my lap. (Lucky for me that I taught in the same community that I lived in. Easy to drive home and change my skirt.)
Thank you for your words about teaching. My return this year has been a bit like an airplane landing bumpily on the tarmac with everyone in the crash position. Everyone is okay, but it is a hell of a ride. I rejoice that many (including you and me) choose to keep teaching, in spite of the real and present dangers and discouraging days. Glad you came back.
Thank you for your compassion and caring. I encountered quite a few teachers with none of either when I was young (a very long time ago), and it always distressed me when they treated some students with disdain and sometimes downright cruelty. The few jewels I did meet were like shining beacons, and I still remember them fondly. Education is so important.
Kiara, thanks for reading. Sadly, we all remember those teachers, the best ones and the ones that stomped on our soul. Native history particularly has a cruel history when it comes to education.
I have had mixed experiences with teachers and administrators. I’ve worked with amazing people in both areas, and there are some people who spoil the soup.

Thank you! I know you have a few back to school stories up your sleeve.
I love this. 🥰
Thanks Rita! 🥰
I love this story so much! I’m glad your students have you. 🙂
Thank you! I’m glad I have them.
Teachers are heroes in my book. Brava.
Thank you!
Love that you sing in this one and very much enjoyed your story of your early teaching days.
🥰 Thanks Sherri!
