Thank you for a wonderful sharing. So much resonated within me. At 73, I do write on Substack, though I took a break while immersing in Nadia Colburn's 8 eweek writing course , after which, I have decided to record on Substack as well, and more than that I hope to begin a story telling group in my community, Today's platforms, though I post to Instagram an facebook, my world of sharing is grounded in storytelling. I'm so happy I followed my gut to listen to your voice.
To you point of learning , yes,a good teacher, one who knows your language, and to that add "showing up for the event"
This is lovely. I love your words on cheering your young self in to make independent choices and the message about trying again is strong. So much more powerful to discuss resiliency when talking about a topic that is hard for you than when it is something in your wheelhouse. I am amazed you manage to write these out each week while teaching and raising your family!!!'
Mary, I love this. I once knew about three songs on the guitar, and Landslide was one of them. I gave it up for many reasons, and you are helping me figure out why. (This might result in me digging out the banjo in my closet and looking for the right teacher.) Thank you for your beautiful writing.
What a wonderful story! One of my goals for the summer is to play piano again. This post is my sign to start sooner rather than later. Thanks for sharing this, Mary!
The only instrument I ever tried was the piano, and the only lessons I ever received were a freshman year intro class. There was a recital at the end of the course at school, and I was supposed to play True Colors by Cindi Lauper. I practiced on a keyboard and couldn’t do it. How did people remember the keys? I skipped the concert 😂
This made me laugh out loud and to also sing True Colors in my head. I once had a very embarrassing drum performance on stage. I wish I had taken your escape route.
Nah, I was a chicken. You were so brave playing at that children’s concert as an adult! It’s badass when you think about it. We don’t let ourselves be mediocre enough 😌
