Ah, Mary. We walk a version of the same road in the fall. I totally forget how to put together resource binders, do placement testing, all the things. My brain hangs back in the summer and I long to linger. I love your ideas for transition, since my junk TV is not doing the trick. My helpful list would include being early to bed (to get extra sleep for the early and long days) time with my husband (watching reruns of "Bob's Burgers" and a new coffee maker that we can turn on from our phones.
I loved rereading this post because I have now read Tom Lake, and I loved the reminder of what a beautiful story that was. Likewise, it was lovely to reread your list of ways to cope with transitions.
Wonderful, Mary. “Solvitur ambulando” has been in my draft post idea file for months. And you are helping me redefine some of my go-to self-soothing techniques as transition care. Not just numbing, but a needed reset. Thank you! Also I had a friend describe that sparkling kind of water as “happy water”, shared from her grandchild. Congrats on your Substack milestones!
I thoroughly enjoyed your piece today and it has given me a lot to think about. I feel like I sometimes fly by the seat of my pants through transitions, but the older I get the more I tend to think things through. I tend to weigh out everything now which is helpful. I need to think on when this shift occurred, my brain is too foggy at the moment!
It’s so hard to be a teacher and see everyone’s fall bucket list and realize you have time for none of that :(
😂 This might be one of my fav comments ever. Welcome Jenna.
Aw thanks! I hope you are having a great school year so far :)
Same to you!
Congratulations on writing a featured substack publication! What an honor. You deserve it.
Thanks. It was last year- I just reposted 😂 But I appreciate the kind words.

I like that description. Thank you Julie. I’m glad it resonated with your work.
Hi Mary!!
Thank you for sharing your insights with us!!
Thanks for reading! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I also am learning to transition better, I think.
