I’m so thankful to work with you and witness the kindness you show our students. Your passion for literacy and equity make a bigger difference in our school than you’ll probably ever know. I can’t wait to do book club all over again! The fun stuff makes the hard days easier.

The parallels between teaching and mothering are so true. I could feel myself nodding and nodding as I read this. I hope the coming break gives you everything you need.

This essay resonates with me! I, too, have the best job in the world…except when I don’t! Thanks for the Pivot tag :)

As always, a worthy 10 minutes out of my Sunday ... Public education is under assault in so many places. Here in Washington state, our children are so very lucky to have teachers like you. I wish there was more we could do in places where children are not so lucky. With much appreciation!!

Mary! I just watched your storytelling. It was amazing!! I got chills at the end. And I love how the themes of the shit/gifts of teaching/life show up both in the story tell you told at that event and in your essay. Reading and listening, I kept thinking about Thich Nat Hanh's teaching "no mud, no lotus." I'm grateful for the ways you both share the lotuses from your work and life with us while also being so honest and real about the inevitable mud we all know in the literal (definitely can relate to unfortunate dog-shitting timing/locations!!) and the and figurative piles of shit from our own human experiences. <3

Yes to “no mud, no lotus.”

So wise and true. Thanks for watching my story. I was really happy with how it came out and also that I enjoyed the experience.

Mary I so love to read your writing. I really got the motherhood teaching highs and lows. You’re so talented at writing as well as teaching. I’ve had a handful of teachers that I loved and was lucky to have had their inspiration passed along to me. It’s very important work that you do. Please don’t forget how much impact you’re having on these young lives. Shit or no shit. And I love that you’re so honest about the shit. I have a mental picture of your walks with Cato. And I just adopted another Cardigan Corgi who will be here this week. Happy to say I’m back in the shit.

Congrats on your new friend! Dogs are the absolute best except when they aren’t. ;)

Cato brings me so much joy as do teaching and writing. It’s all worth it. Thanks for the kind words. It means a lot as does your friendship.

“when it feels like the apathy in the room might suffocate us all…” oof, I felt that in my gut. Loved watching your performance!
